A rare 9ct gold mechanical pencil by makers Sampson & Mordan (the inventors of the first patented mechanical pencil). 
This is a large and heavy piece which also looks wonderful as a pendant on a fine chain.
This would have been made in approx:  early 1900s. The top features a smooth cabochon ruby. 
The case is removed and the pencil is then extended to form a fully functioning pencil complete with the original lead. 
I have used the pencil once to see how it works....it is fabulous and perfect for making those last minute notes in the calendar or letters to a loved one.
